Picture windows —bigger, unobstructed views

A picture window can best be described as a window that doesn’t open. And because it doesn’t have to open, it doesn’t have any hardware, such as handles or hinges. It has no dividers to block your view, at least up to a certain size.

A picture window is a great opportunity to make your windows bigger. Glass manufacturers today can make panes that allow for an opening up to 108” wide by 190” high.

If you are thinking of going large, there are some limitations that have to be considered. The most important factor is the weight of the glass in the frame. For example, the maximum size of glass mentioned above would have to be fitted in a stable, solid wood window frame. A vinyl window frame is too flexible to carry the weight of a larger pane.

Exposure to excessive wind conditions should also be considered. It’s called deflection (an industry term describing the limits that the centre of the pane can flex due to external pressures, including wind). A very exposed situation might not work for large picture windows, as deflection would be excessive, leading to a cracked pane.

If you live with a view and you truly want to take advantage of it, put multiple picture windows together and truly see the outdoors in 3D.
